Joan E. (Smith) Berner

January 27, 1923 ~ April 6, 2018 (age 95)

Cobleskill – Joan E. Berner, 95, of Cobleskill, died on April 6, 2018 at her home. 

Born on January 27, 1923, in Grange, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Marion L. Smith and Ida L. (Powell) Smith.  In 1931, she moved with her family to the Madison County hamlet of Clockville, NY, where her parents operated a dairy farm.

She attended the Clockville two-room schoolhouse through 8th grade and graduated from Canastota High School in 1940.  She attended Oswego State Teachers College where she received a Bachelor’s of Education Degree in June 1945.  While at Oswego, she was the editor of the college newspaper and was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and the Sigma Pi Rho honorary fraternity.

She taught at Jefferson Central School from 1945 to 1948.  She married George L. Berner on August 17, 1946.  She taught math in Elmira Heights while George attended Cornell University and then moved to Worcester, NY where George taught agriculture.  In 1960, the family moved to Cobleskill where Joan served as a substitute teacher at Cobleskill Junior and Senior High School.  After George retired from SUNY Cobleskill, she frequently entertained friends in their carriage house barn.  She also enjoyed the exercise and camaraderie of the “Coby Walkers” group.

She was predeceased by her husband George in 2013 and is survived by her sons: Keith (Joan) Berner of Hendersonville, NC and Kevin (Nancy Niles) of Richmondville; two grandchildren: Sarah Berner McGinnis of Arlington, VA and Alex Berner of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and a great-granddaughter, Clara McGinnis, as well as a sister, Dorothy (Richard) Edson and brother, Myron (Effie) Smith of Inverness, FL.  She was predeceased by her sister, Betty George and brother, Dale Smith.

Family and friends are invited to a period of visitation to be held from 5 PM to 7 PM on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill.  The funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at Cobleskill United Methodist Church, 107 Chapel Street, Cobleskill with Rev. Nancy Hale officiating.  Burial will be at the Cobleskill Rural Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cobleskill United Methodist Church, 107 Chapel Street, Cobleskill, or to SUNY Cobleskill.
