Jean was born to Louise King Mayne and Perry Mayne on January 30, 1928.
She married Lowell Greene on November 19, 1945. They were 17, graduates of New Berlin High School, classmates and lifelong friends.
The family moved to Cobleskill in 1954 to open Dutcher’s Shoe Store on Main Street, where Catnap Books is now. Lowell and Jean eventually purchased the business, renaming it Greene’s Shoes. Their's was the only shoe store in Cobleskill for years.
Like many people in this area, Jean took on additional jobs, working with Atty. Roger Mallery to start Cobleskill’s credit bureau. Jean also managed the shoe store while Lowell took on part-time jobs before becoming an investigator with Alcoholic Beverage Control Bureau of NYS.
As a businessperson, Jean joined BPW (Business and Professional Women’s club), serving from 1964 to 1966 as president. She won a NYS award naming her BPW Woman of the Year. Jean was also very active in the Cobleskill Merchant’s Bureau, the Republican Club, Schoharie County Extension Service, and helped to set up Cobleskill’s Pre-school program.
Jean closed the shoe store in 1979.
She joined the Library Staff at SUNY Cobleskill and continued working there part time for a number of years after Lowell retired.
They moved to Early Woodlands about 10 years ago, after spending most of each year in Lakeland, Florida.
In addition to her husband, Jean is survived by daughters Susanne (Mrs. Edgar Morlang) and Donna Cosenza; grandsons Alan and Daniel Morlang; great-granddaughter Jessica (Mrs. Brandin Cooke) and Jessica’s daughters Rylee and Zoey Cooke.
