Hyndsville- Cyrus F. “Rusty” Montanye, 88, a resident of Clover Road since 1976, passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2019.
Born March 14, 1931 in Schenectady, he was the son of Cyrus F. and Angeline (Bellinger) Montanye.
At age 19, Rusty was enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served on USS AMMEN DD-527 and USS Thaddeus Parker DE 369. Cyrus was honorably discharged in 1954 as a BT2. He has enjoyed going to the Tin Can Sailor reunions since 1986 with his comrades. In 2017 he had the pleasure of meeting the secretary of the Navy, Richard V. Spencer.
Rusty worked construction on the St. Lawrence Seaway, followed by being a laborer and truck driver. Cyrus was also employed by IBM of Kingston and a local cement company before moving back in the area where he was break man on a railroad, head of maintenance at the former Interknitting North Plant and before retirement, a rural mail carrier for Cobleskill Post Office.
Cyrus was an avid auto and truck mechanic. He enjoyed making furniture and helping neighbors with broken down things. Bring it to Cy, he can fix it! Cyrus will always be remembered as an honest, hard working man that loved his family. Forever his daughters’ heroes.
Cyrus was a proud member of the Marbletown Volunteer Fire Department, holding several title positions which included Secretary, Treasurer and Chairman of Fire Commissioner. He was also a member of the former Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 5088 in Cobleskill.
Cyrus is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Cappelmann) Montanye, whom was the love of his life since 8th grade. She passed June 6, 2016 after being married 63 years.
He is survived by his two daughters: Carol Summers of Colorado and Nancy Coogan of Schoharie; his two sisters: Loretta Chambrone of AZ and Elizabeth Kopper of NY; two grandchildren, Jacob and Autumn as well as several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at Zion Rural Cemetery, State Route 10, Seward.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express condolences may contribute to a charity of one’s choice.
