Cobleskill- Charles M. Gaffney, formerly of Cobleskill, died December 1, 2017 at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, FL.

He was born in Sauquoit, NY on July 23, 1918, the son of Edward and Margaret (Doyle) Gaffney.

Charles graduated from Sauquoit Valley Central School in 1936 and continued his studies at Hamilton College and Cornell University.  He graduated from Cornell in 1941 with a Bachelor Degree and in 1951 with a Masters Degree in Education.

He was employed as a teacher of Agriculture and Vice Principal at the Gilboa-Conesville Central School from 1941-1944.  He entered the US Army in 1944 and completed his basic training at Camp Wheeler in Georgia and his Officer Training at Fort Benning where he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant.  After 4 months as a Training Officer at Camp Gordon in Georgia, he was sent to Korea where he served as an Information and Education Officer.  He was transferred to the Military Police Service in 1945 and organized and supervised one of Korea’s six constabularies in Tagoo Province.  He was awarded an honorary Colonel by the Korean Government in 1946.

Discharged in October 1946, he became employed at SUNY Cobleskill.  In 1951, he was promoted to Chairmanship of the Agriculture Division, later becoming Dean.  In 1961, he became Executive Vice President, serving as acting President for approximately two years.  He retired in August 1982.

Charles was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, where he served for several years as a trustee.  He served on the committee to form the first Parish Council and became its first president of the organization.  He was a member of the Committee to organize the Family and Community Services of Schoharie County (presently Catholic Charities) and served a term as President.

He was active in the community, a long time member of Exchange Club serving as President from 1951-52.  He was also a 30 year member of the Cobleskill Golf and Country Club.  He was a member of Schoharie County Cornell Cooperative Extension  where he served a term as President and served 14 years as Secretary-Treasurer of the Dairy Herd Improvement Association.  While in Gilboa, he was a member of the Grange and served as Master of the State Organization.  He was also a member of the River Wilderness Golf & Country Club in Parrish, Florida.

Charles was predeceased by his wife, Anne, his parents, and five brothers, Dr. Arthur, John, Maurice, Justin and Thomas, and a sister, Mary.

Survivors include his wife, Ilene, a sister, Margaret Van Waes and her husband, Donald of New Hartford, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM, Friday, December 8, 2017 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 138 Washington Ave., Cobleskill, with Rev. Arthur A. Toole as celebrant.  A Rite of Committal will follow in Cobleskill Rural Cemetery with military honors.  A period of visitation will be held from  7 to 9PM on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm Street, Cobleskill, NY.
