Born June 23, 1929 in Manhattan, he was the son of Arthur and Mary (Murano) Gustafson.  He was raised in Brooklyn and graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in 1947.  He continued his education (Animal Husbandry) and graduated from SUNY Cobleskill.  Art married Mary Elinor Kennedy on September 21, 1951, settled in the Cobleskill area where they raised their two children.

Art served in the US Army from 1951-1952. Art worked was a milk tester for DHIA; and for the former Rua & Sons in Cobleskill. He and Mary opened a Sears Catalog store in Cobleskill in 1968, operating it until 1993.  Art was a scout master for troop 5 in Cobleskill during the 1960’s. He was a member and served at the Zion Lutheran Church, Cobleskill. His hobbies and interests included woodworking, crafts, Big Band and Swing music, playing the organ, golf, and spending time with his family and friends.

One memory that we carry in our hearts is how much he enjoyed spending time with his dogs. Art was never without his favorite companions. He was often seen walking, petting, and cuddling his pets. He felt they were soothing to his mind and heart, and almost as good for the soul as prayer. Another memory is his unique sense of humor and how much he enjoyed sharing his jokes with family and friends.

Art (Gus) was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary, in 1998.

Survivors include his much loved wife, Elizabeth (Rapoli) Gustafson, whom he married in August 8, 2003; two children: Linda Gustafson-Swartz of Colonie and Daniel (Patti) Gustafson of Cherry Valley; his brother, Robert (Judy) Gustafson of Rochester, NH; four step-children; Laurie (Eric) Kass of Quaker Street, Lauren (Maria) Shafer of Knox, Dale Shafer of Jacksonville, SC, and Richard Peterson of PA.
